Project Overview

This is the type of project we vowed to never take on, but we can't resist a challenge. The client got in contact with us after they had tried to create their own smart home using Samsung SmartThings, but became frustrated by the poor reliability of this setup. The lack of reliability came from the mismatch of devices and communication protocols. Samsung SmartThings is also incredibly basic in comparison to what we can achieve, so the client wasn't able to achieve certain automations.

During the initial meeting we were concerned by the high variation of manufactures. In a perfect world we would have integrated all of the existing devices into the new system, but unfortunately this wasn't possible, as not all of the devices were compatible or we knew how unreliable they were.

The primary goal of this project was to transform this dysfunctional smart home into a reliable, luxurious smart home that the client has always dreamed of having. To achieve this we needed to asses all of the current devices and list all of the ones we were going to keep.

The biggest job was the lighting. Over 15 smart relays were fitted behind almost every light switch in the house, and a handful of GU10 RGB bulbs were fitted in the kitchen. The client only wanted colour control in the kitchen, which is why we used the smart bulbs, but everywhere else used smart relays. Using smart relays helped to bring the cost of the project down, plus it allows you to still use your regular light switch.

Humidity sensors were fitted to all of the bathrooms and smart relays were attached to the extractor fans. Combining these devices allowed us to create some automations that automatically turn the extractor fan on whenever the shower is in use. It will then turn off once the humidity has dropped to a normal level.

It wouldn't be a Luxeia smart home without the central home control app, which we installed onto all of the clients devices, allowing them to monitor and control their home from anywhere in the world. Not only can they access the app from their phone, but they also opted for a control tablet to be installed in the downstairs hallway, allowing them to control everything in their home from a central point. Now that's the ultimate peace of mind!
