Project Overview
This project started out a little differently than normal, as we weren't contacted by the homeowner, but instead by another contractor called Wearside Contractors Ltd. Wearside Contractors got in contact with us as we both worked on Westhouse Avenue, and they had been looking for a company they could trust to do smart home installations.

After we introduced ourselves to Wearside Contractors and explained what we do, they were happy to include us in the West Denton project. Normally we would arrange an initial meeting with the client to discuss what they want to achieve and run through the ideas they have for their smart home. However, this initial meeting took place with both the Occupational Therapist and Wearside Contractors instead, who briefed us on what the client was wanting to achieve, and we chimed in with our own ideas on how automation could benefit the client.

The primary goal of this project was to give the clients disabled daughter more independence around the home, allowing her to perform tasks such as turning the lights on and off, controlling the TV, and operating the blinds. The best way to achieve this was to integrate the Alexa voice assistant into the smart home, allowing her to control the home with ease without the need for assistance. Although voice control was the main goal we still installed manual controls around the home, as any guests and carers may not be comfortable using a voice assistant, and may not know the commands necessary to interact with the different devices.

Several Somfy blinds were installed around the home, as they have a powerful motor that is whisper quiet and works over mains power. Somfy also have a battery powered option, but given that the house was being totally redesigned we were able to run in all of the necessary cabling without incurring any extra decorating costs. The blinds can be controlled via the voice assistants throughout the house, or they can be controlled using a remote.

Using a smart infrared remote we were able to take control of the two televisions, allowing the clients daughter to control the TV with her voice, giving her true independence.

It wouldn't be a Luxeia home without the central home control app, which we installed onto all of the clients devices, allowing them to monitor and control their home from anywhere in the world. Now that's the ultimate peace of mind!
