Planning multi-room audio and a home cinema
Great audio is mostly decided before the speakers arrive: room choice, speaker positions, cabling and acoustics. Planning early is what makes it disappear into the house.

What multi-room audio means
Multi-room audio lets you play music in any room, or the same music throughout the house, from one app or keypad. It can be built from streaming speakers in each room, or from discreet in-ceiling and in-wall speakers driven by amplifiers in a central equipment cupboard.
Streaming speakers or architectural speakers?
| Freestanding streaming speakers | In-ceiling or in-wall with central amplifiers | |
|---|---|---|
| Look | Visible products in each room | Almost invisible, grilles can be painted |
| Installation | Plug in and connect | Speaker cable to each position |
| Best for | Retrofit and smaller homes | Renovations and new builds |
Decisions to make early
- Which rooms really need audio: kitchen, living spaces, bathrooms and garden are common.
- Speaker positions relative to where people sit, not just where the ceiling is clear.
- Cable routes back to the equipment cupboard. See our wiring checklist.
- Outdoor zones, with weatherproof speakers and consideration for neighbours.
Home cinema and media rooms
- Room choice. Fewer windows and a regular shape make a better room. Light control matters as much as sound.
- Screen and seating first. Speaker positions follow from the screen and seating layout.
- Acoustics. Hard, bare rooms sound harsh. Soft furnishings or acoustic treatment make a large difference.
- Conduit between screen, projector and equipment so cables can be upgraded.
- One-touch control. A Film scene that dims the lights, closes the blinds, lowers the screen and turns everything on.
Integration with the rest of the home
Audio becomes part of everyday life when it ties into the home: music that starts in the kitchen in the morning, doorbell announcements over speakers, or audio that follows scenes. Our Chalfont project and Durham project both included AV integration.
The network matters here too
Streaming audio and video put real demands on the network. A wired connection behind every TV and good Wi-Fi coverage avoid dropouts. See our network guide.
Common questions
Can I use my existing streaming speakers?
Often yes. Many popular speaker systems can be integrated so they work with your scenes and automations.
Do in-ceiling speakers sound as good as freestanding ones?
Good architectural speakers, properly positioned, sound excellent for background and everyday listening. For critical listening, dedicated speakers in a media room still have an edge.
Will ceiling speakers disturb people upstairs?
Sound can travel through ceilings. Back boxes and positioning help, and we discuss this at design stage.
