Home Assistant vs Control4

Both can run a premium smart home. The differences are in who controls the system, what you pay each year, and how free you are to choose devices.

In short

Both can run a premium smart home. The differences are in who controls the system, what you pay each year, and how free you are to choose devices.

We install Home Assistant, so we are not neutral. We have tried to be fair, and every claim about Control4 below links to its source so you can check it.

How each system is set up

Control4 is a dealer-installed platform. Systems are designed and programmed by authorised dealers using Control4's professional software, Composer Pro, which is licensed to dealers rather than homeowners (Control4: Composer Pro overview). Homeowners can buy a more limited edition, Composer Home Edition, for personal changes, but adding new hardware still needs a dealer (Sound & Vision).

Home Assistant is open-source software. A professional installer like us designs and builds the system, but nothing is locked away: the configuration is yours, and any competent installer, or you, can work on it later.

Subscriptions

Control4 has long used a paid subscription, 4Sight, for features such as remote access and voice assistant integration (Control4: 4Sight). Control4 says 4Sight is only available for systems installed before 23 April 2024, and that Control4 Connect is the required replacement for systems installed after that date. Ask your dealer what applies to a UK system and what it costs each year.

Home Assistant has no compulsory subscription. Optional remote access through Nabu Casa costs £6.50 a month including VAT (Nabu Casa pricing), and you can use other secure remote access methods instead.

Device choice

Control4 has a large catalogue of its own and certified third-party devices, which is one of its strengths for audio-visual work. Home Assistant works with over 1,000 brands, according to the Home Assistant website, including many affordable devices that dedicated platforms do not support. That lets us choose hardware for the job and the budget.

Local control and reliability

Both systems run on hardware in your home. Home Assistant is designed to keep working without an internet connection, with your data staying in the house. See our guide to local smart homes for why that matters.

When Control4 may suit you better

  • You want a large, dedicated home cinema and multi-room AV system and prefer one manufacturer's ecosystem.
  • You already have a good Control4 dealer and are happy with a dealer-managed system.

When Home Assistant is the better fit

  • You want to own your system and not depend on one dealer or manufacturer.
  • You want to avoid compulsory annual fees.
  • You want the widest choice of devices, including retrofit options for period homes.

One of our clients moved from Control4 in a previous home to Home Assistant in their new one, wanting the same polish without lock-in. Read the Uxbridge case study.

Common questions

Can you replace an existing Control4 system?

Yes. We can review what you have and plan a move to Home Assistant, reusing compatible hardware where possible.

Is Home Assistant reliable enough for a premium home?

Yes, when it is designed and installed properly. Reliability comes from the hardware, network and configuration, which is exactly what a professional installation provides.
