Matter, Thread, Zigbee and Z-Wave explained for homeowners
They are the languages smart devices use to talk to each other. A good system uses several, each where it fits best, coordinated by one platform.
They are the languages smart devices use to talk to each other. A good system uses several, each where it fits best, coordinated by one platform.
The short answer
Zigbee, Z-Wave and Thread are low-power wireless networks for devices like sensors, switches and radiator valves. Wi-Fi is for devices that move a lot of data, like cameras and speakers. Matter is different: it is a common standard that lets devices from different brands work together, and it runs over Thread, Wi-Fi or Ethernet. Home Assistant supports all of them in one system.
The main protocols
| Protocol | Best for | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Wi-Fi | Cameras, speakers, TVs, appliances | High bandwidth, higher power use. Too many small devices can crowd a home network. |
| Zigbee | Sensors, bulbs, switches, valves | Low power mesh network on 2.4 GHz. Huge choice of devices. |
| Z-Wave | Switches, locks, sensors | Low power mesh network on a sub-GHz band, so it does not compete with Wi-Fi. |
| Thread | Newer sensors, locks, blinds | Low power, IP-based mesh network used by many Matter devices. |
| Matter | Cross-brand compatibility | An application standard, not a radio. Runs over Thread, Wi-Fi and Ethernet. |
What a mesh network means
In a mesh, mains-powered devices pass messages on for each other, so coverage grows as you add devices. That is why a well-placed set of mains-powered switches or plugs makes battery sensors more reliable. It is also why the layout of devices is part of the design, not an afterthought.
What Matter changes
Matter was developed under the Connectivity Standards Alliance, the organisation formerly known as the Zigbee Alliance, with Apple, Google and Amazon among its backers. Version 1.0 was published in October 2022 (Home Assistant). Matter 1.5, released in November 2025, added cameras, closures such as blinds and gates, and energy tariff features (CSA). Matter can run purely on Wi-Fi without Thread at all.
The benefit for homeowners is choice: a Matter device should work with any Matter-compatible platform. The caveat is that support arrives gradually. A standard adding a feature does not mean every product or app supports it yet.
Does it matter which protocols my devices use?
Yes, for two reasons:
- Reliability. Putting dozens of small devices on Wi-Fi can overload a home network. Spreading them across Zigbee, Z-Wave and Thread keeps each network healthy.
- Choice. A platform that speaks all of them lets you pick the best device for each job instead of the one that matches your hub.
Our approach
We design each home with a deliberate mix: cable where possible, Wi-Fi for high-bandwidth devices, and low-power meshes for sensors and switches, all coordinated locally by Home Assistant. You do not need to think about protocols day to day. You just need someone to have thought about them at design stage.
Common questions
Should I only buy Matter devices?
Not necessarily. Matter is a good sign for future compatibility, but many excellent Zigbee and Z-Wave devices work perfectly through a platform like Home Assistant.
Do I need a separate hub for each protocol?
Each protocol needs a radio, but with Home Assistant these can be small adapters connected to one system rather than a separate app and hub for each brand.
Is Thread the same as Matter?
No. Thread is a wireless network. Matter is a standard for how devices describe and control each other. Many Matter devices use Thread, but Matter also runs over Wi-Fi and Ethernet.

Home Assistant vs Control4
Both can run a premium smart home. The differences are in who controls the system, what you pay each year, and how free you are to choose devices.

Home Assistant vs Loxone
Loxone is a strong all-in-one system, especially for new builds. Home Assistant gives you more freedom of device and installer. Here is how they compare.

Local control vs cloud: a smart home that works without the internet
Many smart devices stop working properly when the internet drops or a manufacturer changes its service. A locally controlled home keeps working.
