Local control vs cloud: a smart home that works without the internet
Many smart devices stop working properly when the internet drops or a manufacturer changes its service. A locally controlled home keeps working.

What "cloud-dependent" means
Many consumer smart devices send every command to the manufacturer's servers and back. If your broadband fails, or the manufacturer changes or closes its service, those devices can stop responding, lose features or need a new subscription.
What "local control" means
In a locally controlled home, the hub in your house talks directly to your devices. Home Assistant describes itself as keeping your data local, communicating with devices locally and using the cloud only where there is no other option (Home Assistant). Lighting, heating, security and automations carry on without an internet connection.
Why it matters
- Reliability. Your lights and heating do not depend on your broadband or on someone else's servers.
- Speed. Commands do not travel to a data centre and back.
- Privacy. Data about when you are home, and camera footage where recorded locally, stays on your property.
- Longevity. Your system is not at the mercy of a manufacturer's business decisions.
What still needs the internet
Being honest: remote access from outside the home, Alexa and Google Assistant voice control, weather forecasts and software updates all need an internet connection. The difference is that the core of your home does not.
Remote access, done securely
Remote access is set up as part of every installation. Nabu Casa, the company behind Home Assistant's cloud service, offers secure remote access without opening your router to the internet, and it is included in all of our aftercare plans.
Common questions
Will my smart home work if the internet goes down?
Yes. Lighting, heating, security and automations keep working. Remote access and some voice assistants pause until the connection returns.
Can I still control my home when I am away?
Yes. Secure remote access is set up as part of the installation.
