Loxone is a strong all-in-one system, especially for new builds. Home Assistant gives you more freedom of device and installer. Here is how they compare.
We install Home Assistant, and we respect Loxone. This guide sets out the differences fairly, with links to Loxone's own information.
How each system is built
Loxone is built around its central controller, the Miniserver, with Loxone's own wired (Tree) and wireless (Air) devices. Loxone sells through installation partners (Loxone: partner programme), and its configuration software, Loxone Config, is free with no licence fees (Loxone Config).
Home Assistant is open-source software that runs on a small hub in your home and connects devices from over 1,000 brands (Home Assistant). It is not tied to one manufacturer's hardware.
Where Loxone is strong
- New builds with full wiring. Loxone works very well when it is designed in from the start, with its own wired devices throughout.
- One manufacturer. Many core devices come from one company, which some clients find reassuring.
- No licence fees for its software.
Where Home Assistant is strong
- Retrofit and period homes. We can choose retrofit devices that need no new cabling, which matters in finished or listed homes. See our Grade II listed farmhouse project.
- Device choice. You are not limited to one catalogue, so hardware can be matched to the room and the budget.
- Freedom of installer. The system is open and documented, so you are not dependent on one company to maintain it.
- Integrating what you already have. Existing heating controls, alarms, cameras and appliances can often be brought in rather than replaced.
Which should you choose?
If you are building new, want one manufacturer and have a good Loxone partner, Loxone is a solid choice. If you are retrofitting, want to keep existing equipment, or want the widest choice of devices and installers, Home Assistant is usually the better fit. We are happy to talk it through honestly on a discovery call.
Common questions
Can Home Assistant work alongside Loxone?
Often, yes. Community integrations let Home Assistant connect to a Loxone Miniserver, which can be a way to extend an existing Loxone system. We check what is possible for your setup first.
Which is better for a new build?
Both work well in new builds when planned early. The bigger decision is whether you want a single-manufacturer system or an open one.

Home Assistant vs Control4
Both can run a premium smart home. The differences are in who controls the system, what you pay each year, and how free you are to choose devices.

Local control vs cloud: a smart home that works without the internet
Many smart devices stop working properly when the internet drops or a manufacturer changes its service. A locally controlled home keeps working.
